Port Royal is a growing community with its roots dating back to 1562 when Spanish Captain Jean Ribaut, led a group of French Huguenots to claim Port Royal. In 1684, close to 150 Scottish adventurers built Stuart Town on Port Royal Island, which is now in Beaufort City limits. In 1732, Fort Frederick was built as the base for the colony's entire navy. Today, the remains are remarkable and can be seen near the Beaufort Naval Hospital. In 1869, investors began construction of a railroad from Augusta,Ga. to Port Royal, which brought in new visitors and business for merchants. Today, Port Royal attracts people from all over. With great tradition, excellent restaurants, coffee shops, antique stores, and it's small town charm, Port Royal has become a destination for many to enjoy. Port Royal is surrounded by water and is only 7 miles from the Atlantic ocean by boat and is directly on the intra coastal waterway. With existing marinas and new ones being built, many opportunities exist to purchase water front properties.
