The history of Bluffton goes back to the 17th century when the area was known as Granville County of St. Luke’s Parish. Bluffton derived its name from the community known as “Kirk’s Bluff”, with the first streets being laid in the 1830s. Today, Bluffton’s history is preserved in its designation as a National Historic District.

Higher education campuses include the University of South Carolina Beaufort South Campus and the Technical College of the Lowcountry.
